Paula Abdul’s Fun New Dance Project Makes a Serious Point

Sep 30th, 2014

by Denny Directo / ET Online

The inspiration behind Paula Abdul's latest dance project is her sister Wendy's breast cancer. Paula is opening up to ET's Rocsi Diaz about the cause and taking us behind the scenes of the fun dance video that aims to bring serious awareness to breast cancer.

It’s part of a new partnership with the Avon Foundation for Women for the campaign, aptly titled "Check Yourself," to inform women everywhere how key early detection is in the fight against breast cancer.

"[The video] is really about celebration, not really so much statistics," she says.

When Paula’s sister was diagnosed, she says, "I was with her at the doctor and she felt that there was something wrong. "My sister went and got a lumpectomy within 26 hours and was scheduled for surgery when the news came within a day and a half later."

Wendy Abdul, who is seven years Paula's senior, is now cancer-free.

In the video, Abdul uses the fun of dance and to urge women to "keep looking for those lumps and bumps" and expresses her gratitude for bringing awareness to such an important cause.

"The best thing about being an entertainer is actually having a platform to be proactive and do something," Paula admits.

Watch the video for more behind the scenes of the "Check Yourself" shoot. The full music video is available starting tomorrow.
