With the release of her long-awaited-for new LP, Spellbound, petite Paula Abdul has been one busy lady. We caught up with her on the run for a quick Q and A (pant, pant)!
TV & Movie Screen: It seems as if we've been waiting forever for the release of your new album. It is very different from your first LP "Forever Your Girl?"
Paula Abdul: [The new album, Spellbound] is different, but not radically so. I don't want to deviate from what's been successful for me. There are some really great dance songs plus some great ballads I'm excited about. I'm also working more with the producers, collaborating.
TVMS: Your videos are always so fun, where do you get the ideas for them?
Paula: I get the ideas for my videos by listening to the lyrical content of the songs. I can be singing and think, oh this would be a great video concept. And I collaborate with some wonderful directors who have great ideas.
TVMS: Who have been the major influences in your career?
Paula: In the music industry, my main influences have been Stevie Wonder, Carol King, the Jackson's and Aretha Franklin. In the dance world, my influences have been Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron and Shirley MacLaine.
TVMS: Now that you and Full House's John Stamos have broken up, is there anyone new in your life?
Paula: In the entertainment business, your career is a relationship!
TVMS: Do you think you'll ever go back to being a choreographer? What's your ultimate ambition?
Paula: Music is my number-one priority right now, but I'd never give up dancing because it's a real passion for me. I'll always dance, and my next big ambition is to choreograph a Broadway musical. That's my ultimate dream
